Rise of the Asteroid Goddesses

All four of the major asteroids named after goddesses feature prominently in this month’s Lunar Eclipse in Libra on April 15th, with particular emphasis on Ceres the Earth mother. This is appropriate in the month that always celebrates Earth Day on the 22nd. Each of the four goddesses can be viewed as helping us to drop nasty habits, adjust our health regimens, follow our bliss, and improve the way we relate to each other and ourselves.

The archetype of the Earth mother also known as Demeter is bittersweet, as she reflects both the pathologies of loss and grief that we all experience when someone or something is taken away from us, the way her daughter Persephone was snatched away from her by the hands of Pluto, into the Underworld. In her glory when she is able to again see and touch the face of her daughter in the Summer, she reflects the nurturing principle and inherent connection with nature and its bounty. Ceres, like Pluto nudges us to let go of our old stories, you know the ones that were so traumatic that they caused us to shut down and vow to never love again or “never let that happen again”. Like the Moon she simultaneously seduces us into reconnecting with the very thing we fear losing, but this time with less attachment and more wisdom, perhaps to see how far we have come and have grown. Sometimes, rather than a person or a thing she connects us with long lost hopes and dreams. In Libra where Ceres currently transits and will conjunct the Lunar Eclipse, there is a need to feel a part of something. Whether we are the ones leading, following, or partaking in this instance is beside the point, in that what matters is there is a coming together of ofttimes disparate parts to create harmony and unity.

Whether male, female, young, old or somewhere in between either of those forms of earthly identity, no doubt people are sensing the immensity of this month’s energy arising from both within and without. Those who are paying close attention are noticing a profound sacredness making itself known amidst the profanity and chaos, in a way similar to a beautiful lotus rising up from the depths of murkiness. This sense of the sacred, gracefully containing the luminescence of our souls, the Eternal Flame is represented by Vesta – goddess of the hearth and fire. This goddess asteroid begins making an opposition to the Sun on the 13th as the Eclipse draws near. The stress of having been separated not only from someone we love (Eclipse’s conjunction with Ceres), but any separation from our own true selves or whatever we deem as holy has become unbearable. We must find our way back Home, and Vesta points us in that direction. In some people this could mean taking better care of themselves physically and committing to an exercise program or a special diet. Yet in others there could be a realization that they have cut themselves off from others to an extreme and it is time to come back out into the world. Vesta also relates to sacred sexuality, so if there are conflicts within ones sexuality now it is possible they are coming up strongly now for resolve and release. Basically this goddess gets us in touch with whatever we are passionate about.

The goddess asteroid Juno is close up to the Sun in Aries while in exact opposition with Vesta the day before and during the Eclipse. As the Divine Consort, Juno reflects to us a need for commitment in our lives and relationships. This may not come easy when she’s in Aries and wants to do everything her way. Freedom of choice and expression is important, but random emotional outbursts should be monitored. Anger springs up in Juno when she feels she has been cheated in some way, and this is the kind of anger that we will want to be careful of unleashing of now, so that conditions don’t escalate. On one hand it may seem like we’re experiencing a competition between doing what we love to do and what we feel forced to do because we’re bound by our commitments. On the other hand, we could choose to see these two faces of One Original Goddess as helping to bring cohesiveness to our lives where they’ve gotten too sloppy, overly complicated or trampled over by others. When we realize that we can keep our commitments and only commit to what we see fit, then we will also be able to do what we love and love what we do. As we do, we help heal the rift that has occurred in collective consciousness around our divinity, and as women – around our femininity.

While Pallas Athene may not be as actively involved in the Eclipse as the other three Goddess asteroids, she plays a supportive role for each of them. Athene forms a trine to the Sun and Juno from Leo, and a sextile to Vesta, Ceres, and the Eclipse. This is the goddess who was said to have sprung from the head of Jupiter (Juno’s consort), and therefore became known as an androgynous goddess representing wisdom, justice, and creativity. Pallas Athene is the most armed and prepared for the world of men. She is skilled in combat, as well as fine arts that are one of the few links to her femininity. She can hold her own, and she can help show us how to do the same. Athene is comfortable with politics and speaking her mind, especially in the proud sign of Leo. Her creativity is greatly enhanced here, as are her perceptual abilities. It could be that Pallas Athene serves as the balm on our wounds, and the wind in our sails “when all else fails” during this period of uncertainty. She would achieve this by reminding us of what we really want and what we’re willing to do to attain it. If we have health goals she will step out of her armor and be our cheerleader for a minute – yeah a minute to savor. If we have creative endeavors she will egg us on. If we hear the children of Earth cry for help she will lend a hand in aiding them and tending our own gardens.

The rise of the Goddess is deeply felt throughout the challenges and breakthroughs that are occurring on so many levels. It’s not too often that these goddesses all come together in this way, which indicates that we too are ready to increase the functionality of our working parts so that they work together and not against one another. Ceres and Vesta are helping us with the cleaning out and letting go aspects of this, so we can make way for better things that have yet to show up in our lives because there has not been the appropriate space. In short, the summary of the archetypal goddess energies that we may be working strongly with this month are:

Ceres – Earth Mother, nurturing, mother’s shadow, food, sustainable living, natural resources, agriculture, letting go, connection to Nature, small animals and those that need nurturance.

Vesta – Home & hearth, purification, sanctity and sacred space, focus – in health, self-improvement, spiritual development, sexuality (especially sacred sexuality), religious or devotional activities.

Juno – Commitment, partnership versus autonomy, equality within relationship, beauty, personal sacrifice for loved ones, facing/transforming insecurities and jealousy.

Pallas Athene – Creativity, wisdom, autonomy, human rights, sexual sublimation (into creative, scientific, or mental pursuits), creative visualization, perception and clairvoyance.

The Goddess is alive and magic is afoot! Let us use this precious influx of energy to create the lives we have so far only dreamed of living!

Thank-you for writing of the roles being played out by these Goddesses. I have been wanting and waiting for some clarification on their roles, obviously so relevant to this eclipse season.
Before the last March Aries New moon, I got a clear message in a meditation from Sekhmet that so much energetic activation will occur on this lunar eclipse and that people would be appreciated to ground this vibrational energy. So in looking up asteroid 5381 Sekhmet, she has just transitted Aries, and at the Lunar eclipse she will be at 8* Taurus which is the upcoming solar eclipse degree. I believe that she is another very strong feminine deity player in these Venus ruled eclipses.
    Thank-you and Namaste!

    1. That is very interesting about Sekhmet! I have been experiencing a lot of strong cat energy lately, so perhaps she has something to do with this…thank you for sharing your comment and observations as well. Blessings! 🙂
