We are soon to enter deep waters, which could be dark and dangerous or rich and rejuvenating. Mars, planet of aggression and assertiveness has been Retrograde in Sagittarius since April 17th. It re-enters Scorpio on May 27th and goes Direct on June 29th, bringing up unfinished business or buried emotions left over from February. Much of how we experience the transit of Mars Retrograde through Scorpio depends on how we handle our own intensity. Do our passions explode, implode, or project? Are they suppressed or repressed? Do they take over or do they flow with grace, working for rather than against us?
Mercury Retrograde in Taurus goes Direct on May 22nd and exits the post-shadow on June 7th, but even with that burden lifted people might not feel quite relaxed yet. Two days later on June 9th, Mercury moves into opposition with Mars. Astrologer John McCormick has called Retrograde Mars the “bushwhacker”, which indicates bitterness held in check, very sweetly (and sickly) disguised, that creeps up later or spills over the edges when it can no longer be contained. In Scorpio, Mars Retrograde can be especially disturbing, as unexpected tactics may be used to overthrow perceived enemies or victims, whether on a massive scale or on the personality level. Grudges, hidden agendas, repressed emotions or ill will harbored since the beginning of the year are likely to reveal themselves between May 27th and June 29th.
So what do we do if the water gets too hot, if sharks swim up close, or if unexpected torrents actual or emotional threaten our security or that of our loved ones? We do whatever it is we do to protect and survive. We move away and get the hell out or we fight with all we’ve got. We embody our own version of Mars, the Warrior, whatever that means to us. We remember what we learned from the past. We reach for the tools that empower us. We remember the importance of having a healthy relationship to Self, allowing no thing and no one to ever compromise that relationship.
I always hope I’m wrong when I foresee trouble, because each person has the ability to change direction, shift energy, and create new realities for themselves and others. Since it’s better to prepare than repair and the world has already been recovering from several sharp blows since late last year, it might be helpful to take inventory and really examine what the Retrograde planets are trying to show us right now.
The next two upcoming Full Moons both fall in Sagittarius, which brings us fire, energy and enthusiasm to move forward after a long period of hurdles and stagnancy. With Mars Retrograde in Scorpio we may be drawn toward purification and utilization of the healing powers of water in all of its myriad forms. Fire plus water creates steam! We can find healing waters at the edge of the sea, in a waterfall, at a spa, in a teacup, tub, or even in our tears.
If the water gets muddy, we may be reminded that mud can be used to draw out toxins, and that from muddy waters does the beautiful Lotus emerge. The muck, mud and hardships we move through may eventually liberate us from the causes of our suffering. That is my wish for all sentient beings.
“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend”. – Bruce Lee
